After being bought out by the Clippers on Thursday, Sam Cassell cleared waivers on Monday night, paving the way for him to sign with the Boston Celtics. ESPN is reporting that Sam I Am is headed to Boston to sign a contract as we speak and should be a member of the Celtics by day's end Tuesday.
Fantasy Impact
With Cassell gone and Shaun Livingston's devestating knee injury last season leaves Brevin Knight as the defacto starting point guard in LA. Knight is an unselfish, pass first point guard and strong defender that can help your fantasy team in assists and steals. Knight has started the last 6 games, playing an average of 27 minutes a night and is averaging nearly 5 assists a night and over a steal a night over that span. Knight is the Clipper's only true point guard option right now and should see a raise in his nightly assist totals going forward.
While Brevin Knight sees a little boost from Cassell's departure, his arrival in Boston will hurt the Celtics current point guard. Rajon Rondo has been playing his best basketball in February averaging 13.5 points, 6.2 assists, 4.9 rebounds and almost 2 steals a game. With Cassell in the mix, Rondo will lose some playing time and should see a drop in his output, specifically in points.
Cassell should play around 15-20 minutes a night in Boston and have limited fantasy value as long as he is splitting time with Rondo. The guy to keep on eye on here is Rondo. Over the next 5 games watch closely to see whether Rondo can maintain his high level of play with Cassell on the roster and pay attention to how Doc Rivers will distribute playing time in the backcourt.
